Q. What is Lucky Pawz?
Lucky Pawz is a dog daycare and boarding facility located at 130 Stevens Drive in Iowa City, Iowa. We offer dog and puppy daycare and boarding in our climate-controlled, 8,000 square foot facility with both indoor and outdoor play areas. We also sell Royal Canin dog food and pet merchandise.
Q. What exactly is Dog Daycare?
Dog Daycare is a relatively new service that is especially new to the Iowa City/Coralville area. It is a unique and happy place that you can bring your canine best friend for socialization, exercise. Bringing your dog to daycare is an easy way for you to have a happy, healthy, and overall pleasant dog to be around. It has been proven that dogs that go to daycare are less likely to get into mischief at home because they have had time to romp, explore and meet new friends. Just like human beings, dogs get restless when caged in a small area for too much time. We are here to help you make your dog a part of your family. As the old adage states, "A tired dog is a happy dog."
Q. Why Dog Daycare?
Dog daycare works much like a daycare center for children. In the morning, you drop your barking buddy off at the daycare center and then pick him or her up later in the day. During your dog's stay at daycare, he or she will be able to socialize with people and other dogs.
Dogs are pack animals and therefore socialization is crucial for dogs of all ages. One of the most important skills a dog can gain from daycare is socialization. For young pups that have not had a lot of interactions with other dogs, daycare gives them the chance to learn appropriate “doggie manners”. They learn how to communicate with other dogs, discovering how to tell when another dog wants to play and when they do not. Dogs not only learn to be social with dogs, but with humans as well. If your dog is shy, we will take time to get to know your dog. Through positive interactions, dogs will learn that humans are “not so scary”. Lucky Pawz promotes healthy exercise for your dog through interactions with other dogs and activities with staff. Dogs are able to run, jump and slide their day away. Daycare also helps to curbs boredom, ease separation anxiety and destructive behaviors that
may occur when a dog is left home alone with nothing to do. Most importantly, daycare allows dogs to have fun!
Dogs are social animals and benefit from being able to interact other dogs. They'll learn to get along with others, get some great exercise, and just have some good old fashioned fun! It also eases your mind knowing your dog is being entertained in a healthy way while you're gone rather than redecorating your living room!
Q. Can I afford Dog Daycare?
Obviously, this is a personal decision, but we try to make it as easy as possible for you to afford our services. You can use dog daycare at any frequency level that you choose. While some of our customers use the service daily, others use it weekly or several times per month. We also have half day rates. Our philosophy is that the costs are outweighed by the substantial improvement to the quality of life of your dog ... and as a result, to your own life!
Q. Is the facility clean?
Our facility is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected every day. We use top of the line, animal-safe disinfectants that are strong enough to kill major viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens. In addition, our screening process requires up-to-date vaccinations and a clean bill of health. We take great pride in the cleanliness of our facility!
Q. Do we have a veterinarian on call?
In the rare event that an emergency circumstance may arise, we always have a veterinarian on call.
About Your Dog:
Q. Will my dog need to be vaccinated?
Your dog must be current on the following vaccinations: distemper, adenovirus type 2, coronavirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus, bordatella (kennel cough), and rabies. We also require your dog to be on some sort of flea and tick control. We require that all dogs bring in a Veterinarian’s certification of good health upon first visit and every year after.
Q. Must my dog be spayed or neutered?
Yes, Lucky Pawz only allows dogs that have been spayed or neutered (if over six months of age). Non-altered dogs are generally more aggressive and females in heat can cause tension and fights between male dogs. We also don't want to send any dogs home with an unexpected litter!
Q. What sort of temperament will we look for in your dog?
Your dog must get along well with other dogs. Aggressive dogs will not be accepted. That being said, it is very hard to predict in advance how your dog will behave at our facility. Many owners are pleasantly surprised at how their dog "adjusts" at Lucky Pawz (on neutral ground) versus at home (on territorial ground).
Q. Will my dog go through any screening before being allowed to attend Lucky Pawz?
Yes, we assess all dogs for temperament before they join the other dogs. We look for things such as aggressiveness, shyness, etc. Dogs must be able to play nicely. We also use the screening to ensure your dog is in good health.
Q. Do I need to provide flea and tick prevention year round?
Lucky Pawz reccomends that your dog have some sort of flea and tick prevention year round. Through out the winter months the risk of transmission is lower but not impossible.
Q. My dog seems to be licking his paws after his first visit, is this common?
Sometimes after a dogs first visit to Lucky Pawz they can become a little sore including the pads of their paws. This is normal and gets better with time. Just like humans when you work out in a different way that usual your muscles get sore. The licking of the paws is usually associated with the pads being sore from running around all day on a hard surface as well as our playground areas that are covered in pea gravel. The pads on the bottom of the dogs paws can sometimes develop blisters but this usually goes away in a day or so.
